Here are a couple of things you will want to prepare before beginning the SQL Sentry installation process.
- Create a Windows User that has the necessary permissions on the servers you want to monitor. These being Windows Administrator and sysadmin permissions. This account is referred to as the Service Account. Set up will be much easier if the account is an administrator on your domain.
- Know the name of the server where you are installing the SQL Sentry repository as well as the server where you are installing the monitoring service. This can be the same server if you'd like, but it is not required to be. These SQL Sentry components should never be installed on a production server.
- Download the SQL Sentry Unified installer from our website onto the monitoring service server.
- Download the license file from the Customer portal, or from the email you received with the license attached.
To begin, run the installer on the server where the monitoring service is to be installed. You will want to keep the Client feature selected on the first install, so that the licensing process is expedited. During the installation, you will be asked to provide the location of the SQL Sentry database. Enter the server name and the database name 'SQLSentry'. The installer will attempt to find an existing database (in the case that you are upgrading) but it will then let you know that it is going to create a new SQL Sentry repository.
After the installer completes, you should have a fresh SQL Sentry database, and a monitoring service installed, as well as a client. If you choose to open the client after the install completes, it will ask you to provide your license. Here, you can click the Open button and browse for the license file, or you can simply copy and paste the contents of the file into the window, and then click Save.
The client will now take a moment to load. You have successfully installed the basic components of SQL Sentry!
Additional Monitoring Services
If you have multiple sites or domains that you would like to monitor, or if you have a large amount of servers, you will most likely need to install additional monitoring services. For different sites and domains, make sure to install the additional monitoring services on servers that are contained in these networks.
Run the installer again. This time, you can disable the client in the installation if you wish. You will be asked for the location of the SQL Sentry database once more. This time, it should recognize that you are using an existing database. Enter in the service account information as well. After this installation is complete, please be sure to check that the SQL Sentry monitoring service is running.
You may also wish to install additional clients on other workstations so members of your team can also use SQL Sentry. Simply run the installation file on the workstation where you want a client installed. Make sure to disable the monitoring service option in the installer so that you don't needlessly install another service. After the installer completes and you launch the client, it will need the repository information. Enter the server and the database name of the SQL Sentry database in order to connect. It will now connect in the same fashion as the original client you installed, and you should be up and running.
