Accessing Performance Counter Info Without Windows Administrator Privileges

In Windows 2003, XP 64bit, and Vista, you may add the SentryOne monitoring service account to the Performance Monitor Users group to utilize Windows performance counters without providing Windows Administrator privileges on a watched server. Additionally, to access the performance data remotely, the SentryOne monitoring service requires read access to certain registry keys on the remote machine. These are the steps to follow:

  1. Open the Registry Editor by going to the Start Menu and selecting Run…, then type “regedit”, and click the OK button.
  2. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSecurePipeServerswinreg registry key.
  3. Right click on the "winreg" key and select Permissions. Add the SentryOne monitoring service account.
  4. Exit Registry Editor and restart Windows.
